Katarina Wit began skating at five years old. When her talent for skating was more evident, she received an entry at an Karl-Marx-Stadt school that specializes in kids with a athletic aptitude. They met Jutta Muller in this school. Witt made her breakthrough year in 1982, when she came second in the World Championships held in Copenhagen. Her elegance and grace caught everybody's eye, and from that point forward she began to dominate the sport. Olympic triumph Katarina (now Witt) won the Women's Figure Skating Gold Medal at the Sarajevo Winter Games. After four years, the event, she was able to take home an even tighter race. Although she lost in the free-skating competition, the gold was awarded for her efforts on the compulsory figures as well as the short program. Witt is the only female figure skater to win the same competition twice, in the same year since Sonja Heine. Hall of Fame Witt had amazing success as a performer, however, she returned to figure skating to participate in the Lillehammer Winter Games of 1994. She placed seventh but enchanted the crowd even though she didn't win an award. Witt's entry into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame was held in 1995.
